Batman defeats Superman in the auction house
One million dollars was the price of the first issue of Batman cartoon in Action Comics, beating the Superman comic strip which had been auctioned off for three days for 735 000 euros.
Batman comic book was sold yesterday at auction in Dallas, according to the house Heritage Auction Galleries. Shirrell Rhoades, former executive editor and vice president of Marvel Comics, said that sales of those comics are partly a reflection of the weakened economy.
For this expert Cartoon Action Comics number one (published in 1938) is perhaps more historic than the first appearance of Batman, but sales of this week seem to be following its own logic. "We're probably seeing a shot in the interest in comics (...) With the sale of the first issue of Action for a million dollars, I think prices are going to hold up for awhile," Rhoades considered.
"When the stock market falls when the real estate investments are on the cliff, the collectibles offered an investment alternative that has some growth potential," said Rhoades.

Heritage Auction Galleries has not revealed the name of previous owner or the bidder who won the copy of Detective Comics No. 27, the first comic book where Batman appears. The previous owner was an astute collector who bought the comic for $ 100 more than 40 years, a figure that at that time was quite large, has asserted Heritage Auction Galleries. In the 1930's, Action Comics and Detective Comics were selling for 10 cents (about 7 cents).
