This new friend you added to Facebook could be an undercover FBI.

A Justice Department document of the United States obtained by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) reveals that agents have been entering social networking with fake profiles to combat crime.

According to the document, the FBI can use these systems to grouting information from suspects, such as location, relationships, possible motives, and others.

The paper reviews four specific social networks: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and MySpace. In addition, states that Facebook has been "often cooperatively with emergency requests," while Twitter requires a court order to provide information about its users, like MySpace.

Although it's a little scare that suddenly the feds can impersonate anyone in the virtual world - no need to use his face or his real name - eventually everyone, including criminals, are social networks, and the document proves that FBI are taking them seriously as a tool to catch them.
