Antihypertensive treatment: new cases of diabetes and other disputes

Less than eighty years ago, in 1931, White PD asserted in his book Heart Disease: "The treatment of hypertension itself is a difficult and almost hopeless task according to our current knowledge, but in fact it could be an important compensation mechanism which should not be tampered with even if we could be confident of being able to control it. " The same author, but twenty years later and the fourth edition of the book wrote: "The treatment of hypertension remains a difficult task with our current knowledge, but important ongoing studies offer much hope for the future."

Today, after numerous studies and no one doubts the benefits of the decline of elevated blood pressure. The discussions are now focused primarily on defining how much is "high", and what drug or combination of them use to try to normalize these levels. While much could be written on the first point, the objective of this is to try to review current knowledge to answer the second question.
