Top executives from the entertainment industry, when they carry out campaigns against piracy, always claim to represent the interests of artists. But the survey in the Netherlands on behalf of the Government of the country shows that piracy does not hurt artists. On the contrary, have assumed as a way to improve your image, continue in force, to gain publicity and get new fans.

Yesterday, the Dutch government announced plans to legitimize the unauthorized downloads of artistic material on the Internet and simplify the blocking of web sites which disseminate such materials. This measure is a step very questionable in light of the results of the survey published the same day showing that the attitude of artists is not as negative about piracy.

Through the survey, the government wanted to ascertain the position of the artists on piracy, the reproduction of copies on the internet and other opportunities and challenges that are faced in the digital age. The survey was conducted among 4,000 artists of different ages, including musicians, filmmakers, writers and photographers.

The survey provided data very curious about the position of artists on the issue of piracy. The most surprising thing is that the artists are also pirates. Almost a quarter of respondents pirated artwork from their peers. 22% indicated that in the last 12 months have downloaded Internet material without permission from the owner. 71% say they have not done and 7% did not know or will not answer this question.

The artwork is the most downloaded music. Over 80% of respondents had downloaded music artists and less than 40% movies. Only 5% of survey participants are interested in other categories such as electronic books and games.

Apart from their habits pirates, artists responded to questions regarding their role as victims of the unauthorized charge, particularly if they are affected by piracy financial mode. It is interesting, but only 12% of them feel that this hurts them. Most artists claims that the reproduction of copies of artwork are unaffected and some think that in contrary, it helps.

The latter is the case of so-called emerging artists. Are those just emerging, becoming known and in search of an audience. Most of these artists usually release their work freely without constraints of reproduction and distribution and see piracy as a form of promotion.
