toward squeezing

toward squeezing

Nothing better to take advantage of these months of relaxation in the southern hemisphere to learn to take advantage of open source gems like GIMP, the popular tool for drawing and photo retouching. In good time Linux Format magazine has released free on the world the past 18 GIMP tutorials written by Michael J. Hammel, who to date has published three books on the subject.

Although there are talented artists who can create wonders even with MS-Paint, a tool like GIMP is a great help for the rest of the "not-so-talented" and know how to use can completely change the final result ... If you have even decided cases police with basic knowledge of GIMP.

Something remarkable about the tutorials published by Linux Format is not simply trying to teach each tool included in GIMP, but every article is focused on making a mini project, such as creating a type propaganda iPod, create images or integrate GIMP type SinCity with other drawing tools like Inkscape. This allows us to understand the purpose of the tools together and how to provide a final product.

The tutorials are available in high resolution PDF files, and are the same that were used to print in Linux Format. Due to size and are distributed by bittorrent permission to share with the world.

Bonus Track: GIMP, GTK + and GNOME

GIMP was one of the first flagship projects of open source desktop, and motivated the development of GTK + (GIMP Toolkit), the GUI toolkit that GNOME uses today. Before GTK + GIMP users had to buy Motif, the toolkit used in GIMP.

In parallel, Miguel de Icaza and Federico Mena begin to develop the GNOME project as a free alternative to have a consistent desktop environment for Linux. At that time they had the support of several friends of open source, and Nat Friedman and Richard Stallman himself.

After a failed attempt to convince Trolltech to use a dual licensing scheme for Qt, which eventually became several years later, in August 1997 taking the route of GTK +, where Federico Mena already involved.

Finally in September 1997, GTK + is converted into an independent library of GIMP and start the birth of a new generation of applications.
