A virtual atlas on the computer can see how the heart works and how it responds to different drugs

What happens when the heart suffers a heart attack? What moves the heart organ? How does a heart patient to treatment? For the first time, the answers to these questions will be able to graphically reflect a computer screen through virtual reality. Thanks to a Spanish pioneer in the world, the "Virtual Atlas of Cardiology", all aspects related to heart disease can be simulated realistically in the computer.

"The heart looks, feels and, finally, late on a screen" explained from Pfizer, the company that has driven this project, supported by the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine (semFYC) and the Spanish Society of Cardiology (SEC).

After more than three years of work "have managed to make a complete book of cardiology at CD-ROM, capable of simulating all coronary artery disease, without leaving out any."

This tool, aimed primarily at cardiologists, primary care physicians, medical students and professionals in the area of health in general, allow patients to see how they affect heart disease and how drugs act to address them.

The "Virtual Atlas of Heart" is designed especially for teaching, continuing education and consultation with patients, but their benefits will be reflected not only in the medical community but also the patients themselves and their families can better understand what happens.

The 25 three-dimensional images provided by this tool allow the reproduction of cardiac motion (1,500 animated shorts), something never before possible in existing atlases and dissections of cadavers. But also allows internal views of the heart (138 visible structures) so far could only be viewed with complex tests such as echocardiography or cardiac.
