In a massive effort by Microsoft, the next version of Windows will have an almost unbreakable wall against piracy. That effort is to manage the activation and validation entirely online, but not as we know it today.

As confirmed by Steve Ballmer, Windows 8 will be a risky bet. The rumor that many of the modules of the system will be online, including those that let you manage the system (like the Desktop) and those associated with activation / validation. Windows servers Activation Technologies will receive the serial number of the system, and if correct, allow access to these modules.
