The books are a 3D treatment in South Korea

The books are old-fashioned down: South Korean scientists have developed a 3D technology for books that make the characters literally leap off the pages.

The popularity of 3D entertainment has been given a boost thanks to recent films such as "Avatar" and "Alice in Wonderland" by Tim Burton.

Several companies are also offering 3D TVs and soon will soon be selling a video game in 3D.

In the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology of South Korea, the researchers used 3D technology to animate two children's books of Korean folk tales, with writhing dragons and heroes leaping over mountains.

The images in the book have shown that activate the 3D animation for readers who wear glasses for computer screens. When the reader turns or tilts the book, the 3D animation moves in a corresponding manner.

"It took three years to develop the software," said Kim Sang-cheol, head of the team that developed the project.

Kim said the technology could be used for any type of book and believes it can be used in images that appear on smartphones or museums to enhance exhibits.

But those hoping 3D books may have to wait long.

"It will take time to bring this technology to the general public," said Kim, who was not sure of the final price, but believes it will be affordable enough to be marketed widely.
