Stephen Edwin King (Portland, Maine, September 21, 1947) is an American writer known for his horror novels. King's books have been very often in the lists of bestsellers. In 2003 he received the National Book Award for lifetime achievement and contribution to American letters, which was awarded by the National Book Foundation. King has also written works that do not correspond to the horror genre, including novels Different Seasons, The death row, The Eyes of the Dragon, Hearts in Atlantis and its self-described "magnum opus" Dark Tower. During a period used the pseudonyms Richard Bachman and John Swith.
King began writing at an early age, based on recently viewed movies and cartoons.
