A struggle has broken out between the software giant

Microsoft and the Internet search engine, Google.



A senior Microsoft, Tom Rubin, in a speech to entrepreneurs in the publishing industry, consistently accused Google of violating copyright with his ambitious project to digitize millions of books and offer them free of charge, online.

For its part, Google denies any infringement and says its benefits authors plan to increase distribution of their work.

Correspondents say the dispute is a sign of the growing competition between the two firms in the fields of online content and computer program (software).

Since last December, a Microsoft, Live Search Books, allows users to gain access to certain publications that are no longer covered by copyright.

Google, in turn, allows fragments of works protected by copyright to be in place Google Books Search.

Google plans to digitize millions of books and magazines collected from libraries, to make them available worldwide.

However, Rubin says that by doing so without permission, Google has been exposed to accusations of copyright violations.

"Companies that do not create their own content and make money off of other people's content, are making billions through advertising revenue and other sources," said Rubin.

The Microsoft executive added that Google's decision to purchase the home video website YouTube, which in turn has distributed wealth of material protected by copyright, showed that Google's record on protecting intellectual property rights in other parts their business was at best "weak."


The rivalries are intensifying.
