Google plans to launch an online store to offer eBooks to any device with web browser, which poses a threat to the e-reader market dominated by the Amazon Kindle.

The web search giant said Thursday it was launching Google Editions in the first half of next year, with a starting bid of half a million electronic books made with publishers with whom they cooperate and where it has digital rights.

Readers can buy electronic books directly through Google or other online stores like Amazon.com or Barnesandnoble.com. Google shall hold electronic books and will enable your search.

"We're not interested in a reader or a device of any kind," said Tom Turvey, director of joint strategies of Google, told reporters at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

The announcement comes a week after Amazon said it would introduce market Kindle in 100 countries outside the United States, which creates momentum for its leading position in a small market but growing fast, in which between rival is the Sony Reader.

"Business bookseller"

Google Editions allow Google to make money for the first time from one of his business books, including a controversial project to scan and archive tens of millions of books through joint agreements with libraries.

Google will share the revenue with publishers and online distributors in cases that readers buy books through the Google Web retailers. At this time shares the business with publishers to enable searching of books on paper and available for sale.
Turvey said that Google would give the publisher for 63% of the profits and would stay for 37 to himself wherever sell books directly to consumers. In cases where e-books purchased from other online retailers, publishers will get 45% and most of the remaining 55% goes to the retailer, with a small part to Google, he said.

Readers can access the electronic books purchased by Google on any device: computers, laptops, netbooks and smartphones like the iPhone through its correct Google account, Google said.
