The search engine company will compete with Apple iPad, the Kindle from Amazon and the Barnes & Noble Nook to be the platform of electronic books chosen by users.

The online store of books Google opens for business, and although at the moment is limited to United States (anyone on the outside of this country to go to the shopping section you will find a message that indicates that fact) over the coming months will be extended to the rest of the world.

Google Books allows Internet users to purchase e-books for your reading device: Android smartphones, personal computers based on the IOS (Apple, iPhone, iPod Touch, IPAD), electronic book readers with digital ink technology, and even computers across the web.

For desktop computers, smart phones with Android and Apple devices, books are not downloaded for reading offline, but the reader program (already available on Android Market, App Store) loads on-line books, from the cloud. Ebooks for readers (devices that in most cases do not have connectivity to the Internet), most of the books can be downloaded in ePub and PDF, but it always depends on whether the publisher permits. Google itself warns that not necessarily all of the books may be available for download.

Also, the books available may have been edited directly in electronic format, making them more flexible to adapt to the device and display, or may involve scanning the pages, which is understandable for old books or special editions. In the latter case, having to work with a scanned page offers less flexibility, making it impossible to adjust font or font size, and staying only with the ability to zoom on the page.

As in the Apple store, some publications are free and other charges. Among the first group we find the great classics of world literature.

The online reader does not need to install any plug-in, since it runs from a JavaScript interpreter, something that all browsers currently available.

There have been no dates for the launch of Google Books for other countries.
