What about Eduardo Galeano, the prolific writer, essayist, poet, writer and do not know how many things, Uruguay. Their insightful views on the global reality in which we live are well known, and his ironic style, fresh, original and unwrapped have earned him the highest praise.
Well, "Veins" is his most emblematic. Written in 1970 and revised in 1978, has lost the least today. This is a book of Contemporary History, which chronicles the evolution of the Latin American continent, from its conquest by the Europeans, until now. And there is a factual history, that is, facts and battles. On the contrary, is the story of dispossession, injustice and subjugation and destruction that this continent has suffered from the sixteenth to the twentieth century at the hands of the "civilizing" the West.
The main attention is devoted to economic facts, and studies from the gold trade and the sugar in the early days of the conquest to modern forms of dispossession of commodities such as coffee, oil, cocoa etc. Making it a brilliant study of how economies actually emancipated countries belong at all (and could not be otherwise) to their former colonizers. Of course you carefully study the causes and historical development of these facts (the book has a comprehensive subject index.)
And if we add up all that is written in a style made in Galeano, fast, direct, sharp, no tricks, full of illustrative examples, we can conclude that this is a masterpiece, which is read with keen interest and without falling into less drowsiness or boredom.
